Hair Rejuvenation

Hair thinning occurs in both males and females, and commonly occurs due to a mix of genetic, nutritional and hormonal factors. Increased hair shedding can occur due to triggers such as surgery, weight loss, medications, psychological stress, medications, pregnancy, breast feeding or perimenopause. In some cases, the cause is a medical condition such as an autoimmune disease or underlying hormonal disorder.

Hair thinning can cause anxiety and self consciousness - if it bothers you we recommend a consultation with one of our Cosmetic Physicians to address the issue and offer a treatment plan.

What does a consultation about hair rejuvenation involve? Our doctors will take a medical history and examine your scalp. Photos will be taken of your hair and the doctor will review the scalp under magnification. Blood tests to assess your nutritional status, hormones and general health are often useful. Depending on your concerns, our doctors will discuss options including medication and regenerative treatments.

What is Is Telogen effluvium? Hair shedding is a natural reaction to life stress, telogen effluvium, which usually settles with time and optimal nutrition. Optimising nutrition and reassurance is often the best first line treatment. If symptoms are severe, chronic (lasting more than 3 months) or cause distress, topical, oral or sublingual minoxidil is the best evidence based intervention.

What is Patterned Hair Loss? Accelerated hair thinning occurs due to hormonal and genetic factors. Male Pattern Hair Loss (MPHL) is characterised by hair thinning and loss on the crown (top of head), with recession of the hairline. In contrast, Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL) is primarily seen in the “part “ of the hair.

The best evidenced baed approach for patterned hair loss is medications to address the hormonal milleu in the scalp. After assessment, our doctors will discuss the various options and prescribe medications or Regenerative treatments. If you notice hair thinning and have excluded obvious causes, early intervention is advised.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and how does it help with Hair Loss? Some patients choose to support hair growth with Regenerative medicine, using Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). PRP uses growth factors, exosomes and other chemical messengers dervied from your own platlets. It involves taking your blood in the clinic and separating PRP from the other blood components, which is then injected into your scalp or skin.

This works to up- regulate the body’s natural healing capacity and can be help with all hair concerns, including telogen effluvium, alopecia and patients wanting to preserve their hair as they age, including maintain hair and scalp health after hair transplantation.

We use the Emcyte PRP system , which generates very high concentrations of platelets, with 10 billion platlets dervied from a standard 60ml blood draw. A initial course includes 3 sessions, 4 weeks apart. See more information here about PRP.
